Worthington Farmers Market: February 21st

"Everything has seasons, and we have to be able to recognize when something's time has passed and be able to move into the next season. Everything that is alive requires pruning as well, which is a great metaphor for endings"

- Henry Cloud

It's Time to Plan on Pruning!

Despite the bitter cold of winter it's time to start planning on pruning your fruit trees! Annual pruning is a must in order to keep fruit trees attractive and, most importantly, productive. Unfortunately, this task works best during the colder, wintery months. Pruning during this time reduces the chance for disease dispersal and the infection of your trees, when bacteria and other disease causing agents are dormant. Deciding on pruning later in the dormant season will minimize cold injury as well. When you prune your fruit trees, you are allowing more sunlight to enter your tree's canopy, you are removing old wood or disease susceptible wood, as well as creating a sturdier tree to bear quality fruit.

So let's plan on pruning this year! Your trees will thank you by rewarding you with quality fruit! (Keep in mind that there are several other cultural practices that will help maximize the production of fruit. Pruning is very important, but it is not the only cultural practice to utilize!)

Interested in reading more on pruning? Read Modern Farmer's article, "How To Prune Your Fruit Trees"! There are also excellent fact sheets from Ohio State's Ohioline on this subject matter and others as well!

...

This weekend is our monthly Market Sprouts event! Bring your little ones to market and make some crafts with us!

...

We also would like to comment on our winter weather policy for market cancellation! Due to the variability of winter weather, canceling market can be hard to do. Check out our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as our website, for updates on the status of our market if weather persists! We will be open for regular business hours unless Franklin County is operating under a Level 2 or Level 3 Snow Emergency.
