Worthington Farmers Market: January 31st

"If it looks like it did when it grew from the earth, that's your cue that it's a healthier choice."

Healthier Choices, Healthier You!

"At the beginning of the year it's easy to feel like you have to make a drastic overhaul to your diet, but often that just leads to an ice cream craving that won’t quit. Eating healthy is a lifestyle change, one that requires incremental modifications and the addition of more healthy ingredients. Rather than jumping in head first, start with small steps like the following that you can feel good about..."

Worthington Farmers Market: January 24th

"For me, as a farmer and food activist, cooking is the creative process that connects the work of the farmer/gardener/herdsman/fisherman/hunter/forager with the work in all kitchens: transforming the bounties of the land and sea into feasts of honest, nutritious, seasonal, inspired food."

- Thomas Harttung

One for the Cook's...

"Invariably, we hear that there is simply no other way to feed and clothe ten billion people on planet Earth. If you are not an agricultural expert, or a trained environmental economist, you will quickly find yourself in unknown territory, with people throwing facts and figures and thick reports at you. The system that exists has an aura of inevitability. Those who challenge the orthodoxy are deemed naïve, at best—or else reckless, or even dangerous and subversive."

"We challengers need ammunition: cookbooks of facts and arguments to commandeer in discussions about the future of food. Here’s an attempt at one..."

There's Nothing Better than a Sweet Potato

This week's newsletter is all about sweet potatoes! How to grow them, cook them, and store them! Read more about the sweet potato from one of our favorite blogs, DIY Natural!

But for now, how about some sweet potato fun facts?

  • A common misconception concerning the sweet potato is that a sweet potato is not a yam and a yam is not a sweet potato!
  • The shoots, stems, and leaves of a sweet potato plant can be eaten like spinach, either steamed or eaten raw!
  • The sweet potato originated in Central America where it was first cultivated over 5,000 years ago!
  • Animals love their sweet potatoes too!
  • Sweet potatoes are incredible nutrient dense and contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants!
  • And, sweet potatoes do not contain many calories. In fact, pound for pound, there are less calories in a sweet potato than a typical "Irish" potato! Do not let the name fool you!
*All facts were paraphrased from the DIY Natural blog!

This week is our monthly Market Sprouts event! Bring your sweet little ones to market and make a craft with us!

Worthington Farmers Market: January 10th

"Go Bucks!"

-Every Proud OSU Fan!

In Spirit of the National Championship Game...

In spirit of the highly anticipated National Championship game this Monday, we must insist on posting a buckeye recipe! It does not matter if you are an Ohio State fan or not, buckeye treats are fantastic regardless! Check out the recipe below and enjoy!

If you do to consider yourself a successful baker or you just do not have the time, wow your family and party guests with buckeyes made from our bakers at the Worthington Farmers Market!

Makes 42 buckeyes
3/4 cup smooth peanut butter
3 and 3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
16 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips

1. Mix peanut butter, confectioners’ sugar and butter in a mixing bowl until smooth.
2. Using a tablespoon scoop measure out balls onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Rounding balls between your hands to smooth out.
3. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
4. Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler or a bowl set over a saucepan with a little water set to a low boil, stirring continually until smooth.
5. Insert a toothpick into peanut butter ball and dip into chocolate coating ¾ of ball, leaving peanut butter visible on top.
6. Set back onto baking sheet, and when all balls have been coated put sheet back in refrigerator to set chocolate.
7. Once chocolate is set you can store Buckeyes in a air tight container.
