Worthington Farmers Market: September 19th

"I value handmade objects created from materials that are closely related to the natural environment from which they are grown." Howard Peller, Basket Farmer

Farming willow and making baskets exemplifies the way Howard Peller links an agrarian way of life with an artisanal handcraft. He uses the willow he grows on his farm in Roseville, Ohio to make baskets and garden structures that serve as useful and purposeful objects in everyday life.

Worthington Farmers Market: September 12th

"The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few"

Growing and Harvesting Grains In Your Backyard

"Fruits, herbs, and vegetables get all the attention among gardeners."

"Backyard poultry and goats provide eggs and dairy (and perhaps meat) for some, but what about the staple foods? Wheat, oats, millet, and other grains are actually much easier to grow than most fruits and vegetables, yet we tend to leave those foods to large farms and buy our flour and cornmeal at the grocery store. There is a bit of specialized knowledge needed to grow grains, but there are a couple myths that have turned people off from the idea."

- Brian Barth, Modern Farmer

Learn the in's and out's of growing grains in your backyard!

It is definitely possible to do this with a little know-how and will power!

In this article you will learn about:

• The myths of growing and harvesting grains in your backyard
• Which varieties of grains to choose from
• Starting a grain patch
• Harvesting your grains
• Processing your grains

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Farmers Market

There is more to shopping at your local farmers markets than buying local. Although this is an excellent attribute to supporting your local farmers markets, a study conducted by the University of Iowa indicates that when we hand over the cash for our coveted and local Cherokee Purples (a fabulous tomato), we are engaged in a lot more than shopping for food.

“The surprise is that there really are a variety of reasons why people go to the farmers market,” said study coauthor Ion Vasi (University of Iowa). Those reasons go beyond the improved freshness and taste of a higher-quality product. In jargon-heavy academia, farmers markets fit into what theorists call “moralized markets.” In common parlance, we might say we’re shopping our values, or, put more politically, voting with our dollar. - The Reasons Why We Shop at Farmers Markets Are Bigger Than Local Food, By: Sarah McColl, for TakePart

Give Back to Your Soil: Planting a Fall Cover Crop

"With every garden harvest, the soil nutrients that produced the crop are removed and end up nourishing our bodies, rather than next year's crop. For this reason, farmers and gardeners have to replenish the soil every year. Adding fertilizers and compost is one way to accomplish the task, but nutrients can also be returned with a cover crop—plants that give back to the soil what others have removed." - Brian Barth, Modern Farmer

Learn more about planting cover crops this fall from Brian Barth's article found on the Modern Farmer website.

While reading this article learn more about:

• General cover crop facts
• Which cover crops to plant
• When to plant your cover crops
• And, how to sow your cover crop seeds

Worthington Farmers Market: August 8th

"WHEREAS farmers markets are important outlets for agricultural products nationwide, providing them with increased opportunities to meet consumer demand for a variety of fresh, affordable, convenient, and healthful products sold directly from the farm..."

-The Secretary of Agriculture of the United States of America

The 16th Annual National Farmers Market Week is This Week!

We are celebrating fresh, local food here at the Worthington Farmers Market this week! Even though our farmers and food artisans make this possible for us consumers each week, we finally get the excuse to celebrate because it's National Farmers Market Week here in the United States! Farmers markets around the nation are celebrating the important role they play in the agricultural and food economy.

This Saturday, August 8th, Chipotle will be joining us all morning, from 8-12pm! Stop by the community table and see why they are celebrating farmers markets and local food!
